Mehrabad Airport in Tehran is one of Iran’s busiest airports, witnessing numerous farewells and joyous reunions. Currently, it handles only domestic flights, reducing the emotional intensity seen in the past.

Location of Mehrabad Airport

Mehrabad Airport is located in southwest Tehran, near Azadi Square, on Meraj Street. The airport dates back to 1938 during the Pahlavi era, named after the village where it was originally situated. Today, the village is gone, and planes take off and land within the city.

History of the Airport

Mehrabad started with 20 aircraft but has grown significantly over the years. Before Imam Khomeini International Airport began operations, Mehrabad handled all domestic and international flights, making it the only airport in the capital. In 2015 alone, there were approximately 133,000 inbound and outbound flights at Mehrabad.

Originally, Mehrabad Airport had two terminals, but now it has six terminals.

  • Terminal 4: Exclusively for outbound flights.
  • Terminal 6: For inbound flights.
  • Terminal 2: The busiest terminal.

  • Terminal 1: Outbound flights for Zagros, Kish Air, and Varesh airlines.
  • Terminal 2: Inbound flights for Kish Air, Zagros, Varesh, and both inbound and outbound flights for Iran Air, ATA, Karun, Iran Air Tour, Qeshm Air, and Meraj.
  • Terminal 4: Outbound flights for Mahan, Caspian, Taban, Atrak, Aseman, Pouya, Saha, and Sepehran airlines.
  • Terminal 6: Inbound flights for Mahan, Caspian, Aseman, Taban, Atrak, Saha, Sepehran, and Pouya airlines.
  • Terminals 3 and 5: Exclusively for Hajj pilgrims.

Mehrabad Airport has two multi-story parking lots:

  • The first parking lot serves Terminals 1 and 2, with a capacity of 3,000 cars.
  • The second parking lot, opposite Terminals 4 and 6, can accommodate 1,200 cars.
  • A designated parking lot with a 750-car capacity is available for Hajj pilgrims opposite Terminal 5.

Important Tips

  • Passenger check-in closes 20 minutes before the flight, so arrive at least one hour before departure.
  • If your baggage exceeds 20 kg, you will need to pay an excess baggage fee. Carry-on luggage should not exceed 4 kg, with maximum dimensions totaling 115 cm.

Access to the Airport

By Car

Mehrabad Airport is near Azadi Square. Follow the signs from Azadi Square if you are driving.

By Taxi

Line taxis from Azadi Square take passengers directly to the airport.

By Metro

The cheapest way to reach the airport is by metro. Take Line 4 (Yellow Line) from Kalahdooz to Ekbatan and get off at Bimeh Station. From there, you can access Terminals 1, 2, 4, and 6 depending on your destination.

By Bus

Buses and the yellow airport taxis are available for passengers arriving at Mehrabad. Get a ticket for the bus or taxi from the departure hall.
