Lariha House is one of the most brilliant and beautiful houses in Yazd, built during the Qajar era. This stunning house was constructed in 1248 SH (1869 AD) and was later named after its owner, Hajj Mohammad Ibrahim Lariha. It is located on Imam Khomeini Street, in the Fahadan neighborhood, next to the Kolah Farangi Mansion.

Lariha house exhibits a stunning example of the traditional and desert architectural styles found in Yazd, boasting intricate designs crafted from authentic materials like clay, brick, and sarooj. The overall size of the house measures roughly 1,700 square meters.

Traditional Iranian architecture elements such as a hashti or keryas (entrance hall) and corridors have been incorporated into the design of this house. Mirror works and architectural decorations of this house are among the most luxurious and beautiful decorations and paintings of 13th century houses. The colorful glass windows and traditional door frames further enhance the beauty of this residence.

The northern part of the building is designated for the family’s winter accommodations, while the southern part, which houses the windcatchers, is suitable for summer living. The kitchen and cellar are located in the eastern section.

Islamic architectural structures, such as the connection between different spaces and the nested layout of the house to ensure the privacy of women, are maintained in this building. The house features two sections. An inner section for women which is called Andarouni. An outer section used for men, family gatherings, and receptions which is called Birouni.

Entrance and Hashti of Lariha House

The entrance of the house features two door handles, each producing a different knocking sound, designed for men and women separately. Upon entering the house, you encounter the hashti, which creates a transitional space between the entrance and the main courtyard, primarily intended for strangers. This area is also referred to as a waiting space, allowing guests to wait for the homeowner’s permission before entering.

Courtyard and Veranda of Lariha House

Lariha House contains three courtyards of varying sizes and rectangular shapes. The main courtyard features a beautiful veranda where visitors can enjoy the mild weather and sunlight during spring and autumn. Surrounding the veranda are rooms with beautiful doors and windows.

The smaller courtyard has a single room, and its entrance and exit are separate from the main house. In the center of the main courtyard, there is a pond topped with a platform where residents would sit at sunset to enjoy the view of the sunset and the stars in the night sky.

The house includes 22 different rooms, each with a unique name and purpose. There are rooms with wooden doors named Haft Dari (seven doors), Panj Dari (five doors), Se Dari (three doors), Mirror Room, Guest Room, and more.

The exquisite paintings adorning the walls and ceilings of the rooms are truly stunning, showcasing beautiful designs. The Mirror Room stands out as a stunning space within the house, enhanced by exquisite artwork. The Guest Room is specifically designated for entertaining guests and is commonly found in affluent homes.

Windcatchers of Lariha House

Yazd has unique architectural features, one of which is the construction of windcatchers that enhance the pleasant airflow within homes. This house also features windcatchers strategically placed throughout, with one of the most significant located beside the veranda. Interestingly, the windcatchers contain wooden structures that contribute to the building’s stability.

Cellar of Lariha House

In the past, plumbing did not exist in homes, so cellars were constructed to serve as water storage spaces. Lariha House features two cellars, with the main cellar being 6 meters deep and accessed by 38 steps. Adjacent to the cellar and in the basement of the house, there is also a kitchen and storage. In this cool environment, food can be preserved for longer periods.
