Matin Abad Desert Eco-Camp: Iran’s First Desert Ecotourism Resort

Matin Abad Eco-Camp is Iran’s first and largest desert ecotourism resort, covering 23 hectares of open desert, farmland, and orchards. Located between Kashan and Isfahan, it brings together nature, sustainability, and traditional hospitality in one place.

The idea behind creating Matin Abad was shaped by the contrasts of the local environment — from green fields to arid desert, rocky outcrops to soft sand, and from cool mountain air to the warm silence of the dunes. These contrasts inspired a unique kind of travel: one that allows guests to connect with the raw beauty of the desert while learning about local culture and ecology.

Accommodation Options at Matin Abad

You can choose from several different eco-friendly accommodations, each built to reflect traditional architecture and local materials. The traditional caravanserai has been renovated to include 20 modern rooms with comfortable amenities.

For a more unique experience, you can stay in one of 15 furnished Koomehs (traditional mud huts) equipped with both heating and cooling systems. If you prefer sleeping closer to nature, 8 fully equipped tents are available with heating units for colder nights.

All options are designed with eco-conscious principles, ensuring comfort without compromising the environment.

What You Can Do at the Eco-Camp

Matin Abad offers a wide variety of activities for all ages and interests. You can enjoy camel rides, bike tours, or horse-drawn carriage rides across the dunes. In the evening, guests gather around a campfire, enjoy local music, and observe the sky. The region is known for its clear desert skies, making it an excellent spot for stargazing.

You’ll also find an organic farm where ostriches, camels, and other local animals are raised. The eco-camp produces its own vegetables and fruits, which are used in the kitchen or sold in the on-site store. These sustainable farming practices are a core part of the experience.

There’s also a children’s playground, volleyball court, archery, quad biking (ATV), desert safaris, and even a sandy football pitch for more active guests.

Food and Amenities

The restaurant serves delicious Iranian meals using local, organic ingredients from the camp’s own fields. A café and gift shop are also available, providing snacks, drinks, and handcrafted products from local artisans.

Despite being in the desert, Matin Abad offers modern comfort in a natural setting, with clean restrooms, organized tours, and welcoming staff who are always ready to help.

Focus on Environmental Responsibility

Every part of Matin Abad has been developed with environmental sensitivity. From the beginning, the project aimed to minimize its impact on the desert. Buildings are inspired by local desert architecture, using mud bricks, domed ceilings, and natural insulation to manage temperature without excessive energy use.

The overall layout of the camp respects the natural terrain, preserving native plant life and staying clear of fragile ecosystems. The goal has always been coexistence with nature, not control over it.

A Place for Cultural and Spiritual Travel

Beyond nature, Matin Abad introduces visitors to the rich cultural traditions of central Iran. The camp regularly hosts and celebrates local festivals and seasonal events, such as Nowruz, Mehregan, Yalda Night, and Chaharshanbe Suri.

During certain months, guests can take part in the harvesting of crops like wheat, pomegranates, and pistachios. Religious events such as Ashura, Arba'een, and the pilgrimage at Imamzadeh Agha Ali Abbas (5 km away) also hold a special place in the region’s culture.

Other important spiritual locations, including the Carpet Washing Ceremony in Ardehal (100 km away) and 32 local shrines, offer meaningful experiences for travelers interested in religious tourism.

Location and Accessibility

Matin Abad is strategically located near two major Iranian cities, Isfahan and Kashan, allowing for short-term travel and easy access by car or public transport. It’s about a 40-minute drive from Abyaneh village, another popular stop for tourists.

This makes it an ideal destination for those looking to escape the city, explore natural landscapes, or experience the cultural depth of Iran — all in a peaceful and eco-friendly setting.

Matin Abad Eco-Camp is more than just a desert camp — it’s a model for responsible travel in Iran. Whether you're interested in nature, wildlife, farming, culture, or just peaceful time away from noise, this camp offers an opportunity to enjoy it all in one place.

Book your stay easily on OrientTrips and explore a side of Iran few tourists ever get to see — one filled with history, nature, and authentic experiences that stay with you long after you leave.
