
The ancient city of Bishapur, located in Kazerun city of Fars province, was built during the Sassanid era. Bishapur was one of the most important cities of that time, with an area of two hundred hectares. This city is one of the oldest cities whose construction history has been preserved in writing in a stone inscription. Bishapur is located in the northwest of Kazeroon city and was one of the cities with good weather and unique design and engineering of that time. In historical books, the name of this city has been recorded as Bishapur, Bishabur, Beshapur, Beshawar, and "Beh Indioshapur." The city of Bishapur was the capital of Ardashir Khore province.
Bishapur was built in 266 AD by order of Sassanid King Shapur I. After Shapur`s victory over the Roman emperor Valerian, Shapur ordered to build of a city in an area with good weather on the way to Persepolis. During the Achaemenid period, this road connected the cities of Persepolis and Ashtrak to Susa. Shapur gave his name to this city. An architect from the people of ancient Syria called Apasai (Apasai) was chosen to build the new city.
