According to historical evidence, the initial foundation of Meybod dates back to the ancient history of Iran. Meybod, according to a legend, was founded in the days of Kyomarth. The first inhabitants of this land settled near its old rivers. Meybod, is one of the rare examples of ancient cities in Iran, where many old urban phenomena and the remains of ancient buildings can be recognized. The oldest document of historical identity and the beginning of urban development in Yazd is "Narin Castle."
After pick you up from your accommodation in Yazd, your overland journey starts to the small town of Meybod, where your first impression might be its striking monochromatic architecture of desert brick, the Narin Castle. Narin Castle is the most important building in Meybod, which is a historical and old castle and is made of thick and big bricks. These bricks show the old age of this castle. This building belongs to the Sasanian period. The importance of Meybod Castle is related to the reign of Al Muzaffar sultans, who worked for the development of Meybod. The different parts of this fort are located on a hill in four floors, in such a way that each floor overlooks the other floor.
At the local Traditional Icehouse, you’ll learn about the thick-clay construction and subterranean chamber that allowed local residents to have ice and food storage before refrigeration– even during the intense desert heat of summer!
As this historical city was along an ancient trade route, Meybod also offers a number of fascinating sites to visit, including its Caravanserai. Built-in typical Safavid style, this ancient desert inn features verandahs, shaded passageways, and nearly 100 rooms– some of which are now used as artisan workshops.
